Types of EV Chargers
As the capabilities and popularity of electric vehicles have increased, so has the demand for electric vehicle charging stations. Identifying your charging needs is an important step in owning an electric vehicle because charging requirements among EV owners vary due to driving range, driving habits, daily routine, and availability of public charging stations.
Level 1 Charger
Most electric cars come with a standard charging cord that has a three-prong plug and connects to a conventional 120-volt outlet. This way of charging is acceptable for some, but it is a slow charge and can take up to 12 hours to fully charge a battery.
Level 2 Charger
This charger is by far the most popular choice because its efficient and cuts charging time in half. Because a dedicated 240-volt circuit is required for operation, a licensed electrician is needed for installation. Level 2 chargers can add approximately 70 miles of range for each hour of charging and can fully charge your electric vehicle in 4-6 hours.
Level 3 Charger
These EV chargers are used for public charging stations because they require at least a 480-volt power source. A licensed electrician is required for Level 3 EV charging stations. These chargers are incredibly fast and can provide 150 miles of driving range per hour of charging. A full charge takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes depending on the vehicle.
How long does it take to charge an electric car?
At Corey Sly Electrical Service, we get this question a lot. The answer depends on the type of EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) charger you're using. Level 1 chargers, the kind you plug into a standard 120V outlet, provide between 2-5 miles of range per hour of charging. To fully charge an average EV battery with a range of about 200 miles, it could take anywhere from 40-100 hours. If you're using a Level 2 charger, which operates at 240V, you can expect to get between 10-60 miles of range per hour, allowing you to fully charge an average EV in about 4-20 hours. For the fastest charging experience, a DC Fast Charger (Level 3) can replenish up to 80% of an average EV's battery in about 30-60 minutes. Do note, however, that charging times can vary based on factors such as the size of the vehicle's battery, the power rating of the charger, and the remaining battery life.
You might be asking yourself, "Do I really need a licensed electrician to install my electric vehicle charger?" And the answer is 100% yes, you do! A licensed electrician will accurately assess your home's electrical capacity, guaranteeing that your charger operates efficiently and without overloading your electrical system. By choosing a licensed professional you not only ensure a seamless and reliable charging experience but also maintain the validity of product warranties and insurance coverage.
